THOMSON SCIENTIFIC NAMES HIGH-IMPACT SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS
Multi-disciplinary journals Nature and Science rank highest in all 11 fields
Philadelphia, PA, USA-London UK - January 10, 2005 In 11 broad scientific fields, Nature and Science top the lists of high-impact scientific journals, according to six-year data gathered from the Thomson Web-based evaluation tool, Essential Science IndicatorsSM and published in the January/February issue of Science Watch—the bi-monthly newsletter published by the Thomson Scientific business unit of The Thomson Corporation. Developed by ISI®, Essential Science Indicators is the evaluation tool that measures scientific trends and ranks the performance of journals, institutions, countries, and researchers by specific fields.
Science takes the top spot in six of the listed fields: molecular biology & genetics, physics, biology & biochemistry, space science, plant & animal sciences, and immunology. Nature ranks first in five fields: clinical medicine, pharmacology & toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, and neuroscience & behavior.
Another notable highly ranked journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (PNAS), trailed Science and Nature in third place in the fields of plant & animal sciences, pharmacology & toxicology, microbiology, and chemistry, and ranked in the top 10 of five other fields.
The survey defines “papers” as regular scientific articles, review articles, proceeding papers and research notes published in journals indexed by Thomson. Science Watch narrowed the journal rankings by exempting journals that exclusively publish review articles, concentrating on journals that primarily publish original research, such as discovery accounts. Journals that had not been published for the full six-year time period were also excluded from the study. Essential Science Indicators assigned scientific categories to articles from multi-disciplinary journals, such as Nature and Science, by evaluating the articles’ citations.
